Collections of short films are usually uneven, and the found footage horror subgenre isn't something I typically enjoy. Therefore, a collection of found footage horror stories didn't fill me with excitement. I did find _V/H/S_ to be acceptable though; it proved to be stronger than much of the found footage material I’ve encountered, even if it emphasizes some of its most irritating aspects—like video quality, which is purposefully terrible. The story that ties everything together didn't resonate with me whatsoever; I was quite puzzled by it, and regardless, I wasn't invested in it. It's disappointing because I really like the work of Adam Wingard, who directed that portion of the film. Individually, the segments weren’t spectacular, but nearly every part of _V/H/S_ contained a genuinely startling moment—a real jolt of intensity—and I appreciate those kinds of surprises. Final rating:★★½ - It had elements that I liked, but it didn't entirely succeed as one piece.
