High up in the Andes Mountains, nearly 10,000 feet above sea level, an elderly couple, “Virginio” (José Calcina) and “Sisa” (Luisa Quispe), who raise llamas are finding it increasingly difficult to survive. A prolonged drought has dried up the local water sources. "Sisa" is responsible for collecting water, but the trek to the lake has become too demanding for her, so the community might need to pool their resources to provide enough water for both people and animals—or perhaps even consider moving to urban areas where their skills wouldn't be needed. They have a son who moved to the city years ago and they rarely see him. Their grandson “Clever” (Santos Choque) does visit occasionally, but they suspect his appearances are more about obligation than genuine affection. During one of these visits, “Virginio” begins to exhibit signs of illness; he falls while tending their flock and then firmly rejects the idea of seeing a doctor because of the cost. He starts thinking about what comes after death, including his wife joining him, and contemplating life beyond the lake. The film explores this generational conflict in attitudes and beliefs with a tender, persistent, but affectionate approach. The cinematography showcases stunning landscapes that highlight both the solitude and isolation of their home, as well as their contentment with their uncomplicated existence—an existence where little changes from year to year except for, significantly, the weather. They can hear thunder echoing off the mountaintops, yet no rain falls on them as the wind continues without pause. It's a quiet look at a traditional lifestyle and a love that is gradually disappearing.
