A director trying to complete her film school project makes a movie about a serial killer targeting victims based on urban legends. However, she begins to suspect that a real-life killer is picking off the crew, forcing her to stop him before everyone involved is eliminated. This turned out to be quite an unexpected experience. One of its strengths lies in how effectively it builds suspense at times, making it difficult to tell whether what's being seen is actually happening or simply part of the movie itself. The film-within-a-film concept works well because it includes enough elements to blur the lines between reality and fiction, such as a cleverly constructed opening sequence that isn’t revealed as fake until later, a scene where the cast views dailies only to see a disturbing cut featuring one of them being viciously attacked and killed, with some believing it's part of the film while others are convinced it's real, and another moment where a murder during a scream test is so loud that it drowns out the victim’s cries—all of these scenes are quite well done. Even when moving away from that approach, there are some enjoyable stalking sequences, including a chase through a bathroom as a woman tries to escape the killer into an alleyway, a thrilling pursuit through the recording studio and surrounding countryside and pool, and an attack on a carnival ride hidden by darkness and fog. The final confrontation in the graveyard set is just fun—creepy, exciting, and altogether enjoyable, with the ultimate reveal and various twists throughout contributing to a good time. Another positive aspect is the film’s mix of kills, which along with the killer's mask are among its better features. This movie does have a few shortcomings though. The main explanation behind the killings is open to multiple interpretations and feels too contrived and unbelievable. Additionally, the violence is toned down compared to what it should be; while there’s creativity in the deaths, they aren’t particularly bloody, and a few more could have been included. Adding those and increasing the gore would have easily resolved this minor issue. Finally, the film's tendency to jump between the movie shoot and reality can be frustrating. While initially entertaining, the constant shifts become harder to justify as they continue. These are the film’s flaws. Rated R: Graphic Violence, Graphic Language, Brief Nudity and a sex scene.
