After a series of unusual murders, students at a college begin investigating the crimes and their apparent link to a killer who is basing their actions on urban legends; they then try to stop the violence. This film turned out to be much better than its reputation suggests. A standout aspect is that when it was released, the idea of using deaths inspired by urban legends allowed for some pretty creative and original kills. The opening scene with a decapitation in a car is an excellent way to start a movie; the suspense created by a dead boyfriend suspended over a vehicle in the woods, as the killer repeatedly tries to get inside, is quite effective, and the sex/strangulation sequence is really well done because the conditions that make it believable—the backstory needed to ensure she can’t see anything, the killer getting into the room without force, and the sounds of what's happening—are all skillfully combined. These moments truly work due to how they integrate the mythology of the story into the stalking, bringing these elements together successfully. Other strong scenes include one where a character watches someone dressed like the killer stalk a friend in a pool while desperately trying to get their attention, and the tense pursuit of a DJ at a radio station during a thunderstorm; knowing what the killer is wearing proves effective here. This also leads into the reveal of the killer's identity and how their secret has been protected, as there are numerous red herrings with solid alibis, so uncovering more clues about who it is increases the suspense by giving viewers additional pieces to put together. These elements really contribute positively to the film because there isn’t much to criticize overall. The main issue is that the movie was intended for a wide audience, which resulted in toned-down gore. Many of these deaths should have been more graphic, and it will likely disappoint those seeking a truly gory slasher film. It also attempts to satirize the genre while trying to be scary, but some of the cheap scares aren’t frightening. What makes this worse is that many of the jokes don't land, so it feels a little flat at times. The pacing in the first half is slightly uneven with all the buildup to the class and what those elements signify, but there isn’t much else wrong. Rated R: Graphic Violence, Graphic Language, some alcohol use, a scene with a dog drinking, and a brief mild sex scene.
