The movie follows a recently widowed man named “Carl,” who bears a striking resemblance to Henry Kissinger, as he gets into a disagreement with a construction worker that results in a court order sending him to the "Shady Oak" retirement home. Refusing to accept this fate, Carl releases thousands of balloons on the day he’s supposed to leave, managing to lift his house into the air. He then sets off toward “Paradise Falls,” an idyllic location in South America where he and his wife had always hoped to visit. While floating high above the ground, a knock comes at the door; it's "Russell," a boy scout who just happened to be on the balcony when the house took off. The two don’t connect right away, but after a storm reveals that Russell has some practical skills, they reach an understanding and find themselves trekking through the jungle, pulling Carl’s floating home along with them. It's during this journey that they encounter "Kevin," a bird with a large beak, and “Dug,” a talking dog. As they continue their quest, they meet an adventurer who seems friendly at first, but his true nature is questioned when he discovers Kevin’s existence. The animation is bright and energetic, and the adventure itself provides plenty of entertainment, featuring a grumpy old man's sarcastic comments, a pleasant and not overly irritating child in Russell, and a final ten minutes that are quite exciting. While it isn't my top choice among Disney/Pixar films, it easily gets through ninety minutes without feeling like a chore.
