This film extends the story from the well-known television program, and Howerd returns as the unfortunate slave at the center of comedic events. The writing is full of suggestive jokes, allowing for plenty of Howerd’s particular style of humor, which often includes direct addresses to the audience—a technique that was characteristic of his peak popularity in the United Kingdom. The sets are simple and inexpensive-looking, not much different from what viewers will remember from the TV show, and the storyline is equally unfocused. Howerd finds himself irritating Roman soldier Percival, who chases him throughout the film, even during a scene where his masters, Horden and Murray, host an overtly sexual party with numerous nude performers. Fraser has arranged for the assassination of the eccentric Emperor Nero (Cargill), but Howerd interferes with those plans. Ultimately, a volcanic eruption wipes out everyone! The female actors are attractive and tasteful, with Smith as Erotica being particularly memorable in several respects. Ege is visually pleasing, though her role is quite small, which isn't really an issue. Coming from a period when many British television programs were adapted into films, this remains an enjoyable experience.
