I’ve always been drawn to films about submarines. The idea of them as instruments of war has consistently offered a good setting for an adventure—a unique atmosphere, shadowy waters, and torpedoes that seemed surprisingly inaccurate! Most importantly, these movies never included any sentimental romantic subplots! This one begins with James Garner ("Braden") recreating the beach scene from "From Here to Eternity" (1953), featuring Andra Martin ("Sally"), and I immediately felt disappointed—it looked like a cliché! However, it turns out that’s not really where the story goes. Shortly after this swimsuit-and-sand business and a marriage proposal after only two weeks of knowing each other, he's sent to Pearl Harbor and soon finds himself at sea on a risky, classified mission to document Japanese radio codes. Edmond O'Brien plays his commanding officer—the men have an awkward start, and Alan Hale Jr ("Malone") is the generally cheerful Irish presence attempting to maintain harmony, and things begin to move along at a good speed. Garner tends to be better in comedic parts; he’s not anyone's typical hero, but he manages alright here. The conflict with O'Brien feels rather contrived—we know what's coming all along, so why add this unnecessary hostility? Once the action gets going, it has a decent amount of suspense, and the ending delivers an impressive show of explosions. It’s not the finest example of the genre, but if you can skip the first twenty minutes, it's definitely worth seeing.
