It’s an odd one. The movie is agreeable enough, visually appealing with its widescreen cinematography and vibrant colors, and James Garner and Edmond O'Brien deliver solid performances. As you’d anticipate from a submarine warfare story, it manages to create a sense of confinement. However, it doesn’t quite come together as a complete package; it gets bogged down in ordinary moments that try the audience’s tolerance. There's also a significant issue with accepting what happens during the concluding mission. Given that this is a Hollywood production from Warner Brothers released in 1959, you don't necessarily anticipate strict realism in the storytelling—in fact, heightened incredulity can often be exciting. But this one pushes it too far. Alan Hale Junior appears to provide comic relief, which works well against Garner’s likable personality, but director Gordon Douglas moves at such a slow pace that the comedy feels like a welcome respite for everyone involved. Ultimately, you see both the strengths and weaknesses of 1950s war films here; it boasts high production values, but lacks narrative drive. It earns a 6/10.
