It's difficult to find anything fresh or original to comment about this horror movie, which feels like a rehash of familiar tropes. The narrative follows a group of friends—a predictable collection of characters—as they embark on what turns out to be a hunt for women. “Melanie,” introduced in a fleeting initial scene, is missing, prompting her sister “Clover” (played by Ella Rubin) to assemble a search party consisting of her former boyfriend “Max” (Michael Cimino), close friend “Nina” (Odessa A’zion), her new partner “Abe” (Belmont Cameli), and the somewhat mystical “Megan” (Ji-young Yoo). As an old song warns, venturing into the woods at night brings unexpected consequences, leading to a series of questionable choices. The standard horror scenario unfolds within a house, and the plot progresses in a repetitive manner reminiscent of a bloody take on "Groundhog Day." Both the performances and the script struggle for supremacy in terms of being uninspired—particularly Cameli’s performance, which felt stiff and unnatural—and the story becomes so cyclical that I found myself sympathizing with those responsible for the terrible events. What's frustrating is that the plot initially showed promise; it could have been significantly improved if the director had moved away from established conventions and embraced some creative risks. Instead, the only risk taken was casting a group of actors who are easily forgotten and delivering something incomplete, stuck between spiritualism and amateurishness. It’s an acceptable film for summer viewing, but ultimately lacks both scares and lasting impact.
