Anthony Robles’s goal is to compete at the highest level of American college wrestling, an aspiration complicated by the fact he only has one leg. However, he doesn't seem inclined to back down from a difficult pursuit. Jharrel Jerome provides a solid performance portraying the character's dramatic side, while Anthony Robles himself handles the physically demanding wrestling sequences. Jennifer Lopez, unfortunately, doesn’t make much of an impression as his mother and appears lost in a troubled relationship. The film functions reasonably well when it concentrates on Robles’s drive and dedication, but devotes too much time to family conflicts. While these issues certainly contributed to his extraordinary accomplishments, they slow down the narrative and immerse viewers in unnecessary melodrama that diminishes the impact of what is fundamentally a worthwhile story. Michael Peña offers a more engaging portrayal as his coach, who provides straightforward encouragement, and the camera work during the action sequences effectively conveys the exertion and effort Robles put into demonstrating his ability to succeed in a fiercely competitive arena where he would face no leniency. I think a documentary format might have been preferable, since Robles is the central figure and the supporting characters tend to weigh down the story with overwrought dialogue and emotionalism. I appreciated the close-up photography during the wrestling scenes; although occasionally shaky, it made the action on the mat feel more immediate for someone who completely devoted himself to his sport. It’s a clear illustration of what's possible when you maintain a positive mindset and have the necessary support.
