Tony Scott returns to form with this one, teaming up with Denzel again. Unstoppable comes from director Tony Scott and screenwriter Mark Bomback, featuring Denzel Washington, Chris Pine, Rosario Dawson, Ethan Suplee & Kevin Dunn. Ben Seresin handled the cinematography, and Harry Gregson-Williams composed the score. The story centers on Washington and Pine as Pennsylvania rail workers at different points in their careers. As they work together for the first time, clashing initially, they find themselves caught up in a desperate chase after a runaway train. This out-of-control vehicle is hauling tankers full of volatile cargo, traveling at 70 miles per hour and needing to be stopped before it reaches populated areas. It feels like Scott and Washington are trying to make up for the misstep that was The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3, and they’ve chosen another train-themed movie, this time really letting loose. The film is straightforward, just as the plot description indicates—a disaster movie set on a railway—but with Scott pushing it to its limits, it's about as entertaining as you can expect from a modern popcorn flick. It has all of the director’s signature touches: a moving camera, rapid editing and an intense sound design. And unlike Pelham, there are no lulls in the pacing. Even when the characters’ personal issues and backgrounds are revealed, Unstoppable doesn't let up for even a moment. The development of their friendship is obvious from the start, and you know how things will turn out, but if you're looking for sharp social commentary or an examination of modern rail yard politics? You'll likely be disappointed. A runaway train being chased by Captain Kirk and Malcolm X, directed by the filmmaker behind Top Gun—yes, it’s a real adrenaline rush. It earns a solid 8/10.
