Dean on Unlocked

10/10 · Feb 1, 2026

Unlocked functions as a disturbing warning for contemporary audiences, earning a perfect 10/10 score due to its exploration of how technology can be used to destroy someone's life. The film centers on Lee Na-mi’s unfortunate experience when she loses her phone on public transportation and it is found by Oh Jun-yeong, who is portrayed as calculating and lacking empathy. Instead of a conventional chase, the story becomes an intense psychological battle as Jun-yeong uses spyware to replicate Na-mi's existence. He doesn't simply observe her; he deliberately breaks down her life by creating distance between her and her job, her closest friend, and even her father. The film maintains suspense through Na-mi’s complete ignorance of how her personal information is being used against her, culminating in a violent and confining final confrontation that demonstrates just how easily someone can be eliminated when their digital footprint is exposed. The acting significantly enhances the story, transforming it into an exceptional example of its kind. Im Si-wan is unsettling as Jun-yeong, presenting a detached and clinical depiction of someone who sees people only as data to be controlled. The contrast between his composure and politeness while engaging in acts of digital harassment is especially frightening. Chun Woo-hee also delivers a remarkable performance, portraying the fragility of a woman whose world is falling apart. Her portrayal of an average office worker becoming a desperate survivor feels real and impactful, connecting the film’s technological anxieties to a very human experience. Their performances combine to create a stifling sense of dread that establishes this as one of the most gripping thrillers ever made in South Korea.
