There’s something special about hearing a train whistle late at night. Union Pacific comes from Cecil B. DeMille, who received assistance due to illness, and is adapted from Ernest Haycox’s novel Trouble Shooter. The film features Barbara Stanwyck, Joel McCrea, Robert Preston, Brian Donlevy, Akim Tamiroff, and Lynne Overman. It presents a fictionalized version of the railroad's construction across the American West, detailing the difficulties, conflicts, and rivalries that emerged as history unfolded. "The story of Union Pacific is the drama of a nation—young, resilient, extravagant, and unstoppable—triumphing over the vastness of the West with an iron pathway. The West represents America’s dominion, and not long ago, Union Pacific was the frontier." A major production that proved successful commercially when it first appeared, Union Pacific is an enjoyable and significant contribution to Western cinema, even if it does lean heavily into patriotic themes. Along with John Ford's Stagecoach, released a short time before this film, DeMille’s movie helped elevate the Western genre to a more mature audience. It wasn’t until the 1950s that the Western truly came into its own, but both Stagecoach and Union Pacific had an undeniable impact over the years. The film is intelligent while incorporating action sequences, all based around a romantic entanglement involving McCrea, Stanwyck, and Preston—the first as a quiet problem-solver tasked with maintaining peace, and the second as a likable antagonist with hidden depths. The cast members perform well within their roles, and if you don’t mind the historical liberties taken in the narrative, then this is an easy film to suggest to fans of Westerns. 7/10
