The story follows several students who escape a school bus accident and take shelter inside an old hotel deep within the woods. The central question is identifying the dangerous force they encounter—or what it might be—and whether anyone will make it out alive. I initially expected “Unhuman” (2022) to resemble Steve Gerber’s "A Question of Survival," specifically the Man-Thing storyline in Adventure Into Fear #18 (1973), which centers on survivors of a crash struggling through wilderness terrain seeking help. The beginning feels like a blend of “Zombie Island Massacre,” “The Summoning,” and “Night of the Living Dead” alongside “Shock Waves” (1977), especially because of that abandoned resort setting. Things pick up when an unexpected development occurs, making it ultimately a lighthearted look at teenagers reversing the power dynamic, ordinary people stepping up, and even bullies finding some form of redemption. Ali Gallo, with her expressive eyes, is memorable as Tamra, though I couldn’t help but roll my eyes that she wears a jacket tied around her waist for much of the film. Lo Graham also makes an impression as Jacey. One of the male actors bears a striking resemblance to Peter Frampton. Despite its lively and contemporary feel—and boosted by Ali Gallo's performance and the plot’s shift—the final portion drags, even with fast-paced editing and some action sequences that don’t quite land. Some adjustments would have made it more satisfying; however, there are still a few genuinely meaningful moments to be found. The film is 1 hour, 31 minutes long and was filmed in the New Orleans area. GRADE: B-
