Russell Crowe gives a powerfully compelling performance as an unhinged driver in Derrick Borte’s film, which presents an intentionally over-the-top story rooted in experiences many people have had. The movie contains a considerable amount of graphic violence and doesn't shy away from killing off characters in unexpected ways, making for an undeniably entertaining experience. The script by Carl Ellsworth struggles with developing the characters; I was left knowing very little about them beyond their surface relationships, which mainly serve to advance the plot toward more bloodshed. The story takes some unbelievable turns, and the final scene wraps up with a predictable resolution featuring a choice that no reasonable person would make. Despite these flaws, I feel the core storyline is surprisingly close to real-life situations, particularly in the first half of the film. Ultimately, my biggest problem might be that Caren Pistorius’s character was responsible for the incident that sets everything in motion. Her behavior showed arrogance and a lack of consideration, and she seemed incapable of offering a simple apology to someone who had initially been kind. That, to me, represents her most significant failing, which is why I found myself not particularly invested in her fate or that of her family. Rating: B-
