Russell Crowe appears in the new thriller “Unhinged” and delivers a forceful portrayal that seems characteristic of his work. He portrays a man who has fallen apart after losing both his job and his marriage, killing his ex and her partner before setting fire to their house and disappearing. Rachel (Caren Pistorius) is experiencing a period where everything appears to be falling apart for her. She’s going through a difficult divorce, recently lost an important client, and struggles with caring for her son while also dealing with her brother moving in to help cover the cost of care for a family member. As one problem after another accumulates for Rachel, compounded by heavy traffic as she tries to get her son to school on time to avoid detention; she honks and makes an abrupt turn in front of this man. He is offended by this and drives alongside Rachel, demanding an apology for her actions. Rachel has long since stopped caring about such things and doesn’t offer a satisfactory response, which further provokes the man. Following some aggressive road rage, Rachel thinks she's left it behind and drops her son off at school. While filling up her gas tank, she notices that the man is following her, and when her attempts to de-escalate the situation only serve to anger him more, she realizes just how dangerous and unstable he truly is. What ensues is a perilous game of chase as the man mocks Rachel while enacting revenge on those close to her, all while preparing for their next encounter. Crowe’s performance is excellent; he delivers an intense portrayal without veering into overly theatrical territory, which often happens in films like this. He's a captivating antagonist who holds the viewer’s attention and it’s clear that he’s someone who has simply broken under the pressures of life and believes his actions are justified. Although I was able to anticipate one of the major moments near the end, it unfolded in a slightly different way, which felt refreshing. The film is intense and gripping, and Director Derrick Borte prevents things from becoming too exaggerated, particularly toward the conclusion where typical Hollywood conventions for this genre tend to surface. The filmmakers smartly depend on Crowe’s acting ability and the supporting cast's contributions, offering a welcome return to theatrical releases for audiences as long as they are willing to set aside some minor issues and concentrate on the intense story and compelling performances. 4 stars out of 5
