This movie manages to combine action, horror elements, monsters, weaponry, impressive practical effects, amazing creature designs, and a genuinely great cast featuring Kate Beckinsale, resulting in one of the strongest films in its category! Underworld offers a fresh perspective on vampire and werewolf stories by depicting them as rivals fighting for dominance within a criminal world populated by terrifying beings. It's remarkable how much this film achieves given what was apparently a modest budget; it doesn’t feel constrained at all. The action is excellent, and the fight scenes are particularly well-done. Kate Beckinsale demonstrates her potential as an action star here, especially considering she had previously mostly done romantic comedies. The creature designs, special effects, sets, photography, and even the supporting actors are all exceptional quality. Director Len Wiseman succeeded in creating a genre-bending success with limited resources that any fan of action or horror should enjoy.
