The latest installment in the Underworld series continues the story of vampire Selene (Kate Beckinsale) and werewolf Michael (Scott Speedman) as they investigate the origins of the conflict between their species. The central question explored is what sparked the long-standing animosity between vampires and lycans. Reactions to this sequel have been varied, with some finding it a worthwhile action film while others consider it disappointing compared to the original. I enjoyed it more, though, because it essentially replicates the formula of the first movie, but attempts to add layers to the plot in an effort to appear intelligent. Given that it's about warring vampires and werewolves, the film provides exactly what audiences expect these days: intense action sequences, plenty of violence, extensive use of computer-generated imagery, a rapid pace, and a charismatic female lead. The narrative progresses well, introducing new characters while flashbacks provide context for those unfamiliar with the series. The primary antagonist is an intimidating winged figure, a real threat that the heroes have reason to be afraid of, and the ending delivers the expected level of chaotic bloodshed. Director Len Wiseman’s work and Simon Duggan's cinematography (using cool blues and grays) are well-executed; it isn’t revolutionary cinema, but it offers an enjoyable experience for those looking for a straightforward action movie.
