Josef von Sternberg’s handling of Ben Hecht’s gangster thriller proves effective. George Bancroft portrays "Bull Weed," a lively personality, who finds himself enamored with "Feathers" – a fitting name given her fondness for elaborate headwear – played by Evelyn Brent. Clive Brook appears as “Rolls Royce Wensel,” the former lawyer, struggling with alcohol dependency; however, "Weed" helps him overcome it, only to have him develop feelings for Weed's sweetheart. When "Weed" is arrested and given a death sentence for murder, the group faces a choice: flee together or attempt a rescue. Simultaneously, “Bull” has his own schemes for retribution, leading up to an exhilarating finale. The film contains many elements. A love triangle slowly emerges as a central theme, but it doesn't dominate the narrative; it remains primarily a gangster story with a subtle undercurrent of menace from Bancroft and considerable on-screen rapport among the three leads. As anticipated, the cinematography is excellent. While I felt there were perhaps too many still camera angles that slightly impede the film’s momentum, the plot is well-developed, and the final ten minutes are particularly strong.
