Ian Tuason’s UNDERTONE is a striking first effort centered around sound, featuring a remarkable performance by Nina Kiri alongside some truly exceptional and oppressive sound design—easily among the best I've encountered recently. Despite its innovative podcast-like format, the story ultimately falls into a pattern of repetition and relies on well-worn horror conventions. The ending feels convoluted and doesn’t quite manage to explore its serious subjects of caregiver loneliness and remorse as effectively as it could have, but it still stands out as an ambitious and intensely atmospheric introduction that is sure to generate discussion.
