It deserves recognition that Scarlett Johansson consented to filming in Glasgow’s cold, damp winter for this rather captivating science fiction story. She travels around the city in a van, seemingly searching for young men interested in casual encounters. At her place – and that isn't always consistent – they unexpectedly find themselves in another complicated circumstance. There is no violence or harshness present; instead, there’s a subtle, almost overwhelming feeling. What exactly is happening? Is she even aware of it? Developments occur following an excursion into the woods where she meets a gamekeeper accustomed to being in control rather than compliant. His attempted assault on her seems to trigger something and... Now a puzzling situation arises. Is her conduct shifting due to contact with other people, or does that interaction itself fuel what she desires? That’s a question that lingers throughout this artfully shot, largely dialogue-free mystery, and perhaps there simply isn't a resolution. It’s interesting to see a woman taking on the predatory role, her appeal working effectively even on those from less privileged backgrounds, and I appreciated the ending because I remained unsure of what transpired. This is an atypical film – enjoyable doesn't quite describe it, but it’s definitely distinctive.
