It’s possible to view this fairly straightforward Victorian drama in two ways: either it represents a departure from Hitchcock’s typically flawless work; or it shows that he's capable of more than just the suspense thrillers he’s celebrated for. I tend to favor the second interpretation! Michael Wilding comes to New South Wales seeking opportunity and connects with "Mr. Flusky" (Joseph Cotton) as someone who might be a good business associate. During a dinner, he learns that Flusky has a past connection with his wife, the troubled alcoholic "Lady Henrietta" (Ingrid Bergman). The narrative attempts to weave together their pasts and present circumstances, and the three characters – along with a dependable performance from Cecil Parker as the Governor – generate an acceptable melodrama that's not unpleasant, even though I eventually found Bergman’s acting—her characteristic emotional intensity—a little disheartening.
