Watching a man repeatedly fail for two intense hours might not sound appealing, but this is a well-crafted film. If you hold it up to the sky, it will shine a billion beautiful miracles painted from the tears of the most High. Plucked from the lush gardens of a yellowish-green paradise, look inside this hypnotic gem and a kaleidoscope of titillating, soul-raising sights and colors will tease and seduce your eyes and mind. Written by Ronald Bronstein, Josh Safdie, and Benny Safdie, and directed by the Safdies, _Uncut Gems_ is essentially two hours and fifteen minutes of watching a man mess up in increasingly dramatic and disastrous ways, making bad decision after bad decision, and giving into his gambling addiction more and more. It’s a film where you know from the start that he won't be able to escape one of his mistakes, and at that point, his seemingly unwavering optimism and belief in his own fantasies will fail him. So, from the very beginning, you're on edge, and remain so throughout. The movie never stops moving at a chaotic, breakneck speed, possessing an energy that’s almost overwhelming. Two hours and fifteen minutes of rapidly-paced, stressful cinema about a delusional hustler making mistakes? It doesn't sound fun, does it? However, the film is made with such skill, the visual design is superb, the dialogue sharp, and the acting intense, that you might as well be watching a documentary. It’s a movie built of pure sweat and anxiety, and it’s about as stressful an experience as you can have at the movies. It's also excellent, and I highly recommend it. The film begins in 2010 in Welo Mine, Ethiopia, with the discovery of an ultra-rare black opal of extraordinary translucence. We then cut to New York in 2012, where Howard Ratner (Adam Sandler) is a charismatic jeweller who lives by robbing Peter to pay Paul. A serious gambling addict, he always has at least one hustle going and always owes someone something. Soon after we meet him, it's revealed that he’s currently in debt to his loan-shark brother-in-law Arno (Eric Bogosian) to the tune of $100,000, and Arno is having such a hard time with him that he’s had to hire two Boston thugs, Phil (Keith Williams Richards) and Nico (Tommy Kominik), to try to collect. Meanwhile, his jewellery business is doing well, partly because of his colleague Demany (Lakeith Stanfield), who helps bring in high-profile clients. The latest example of this is basketball player Kevin Garnett (who gives a surprisingly strong performance). As Garnett browses the store, it's revealed that Howard has smuggled the black opal into the country for an auction the following day, where he expects it will sell for up to $1 million.
