The movie struggles with its rhythm. It centers on a young man, Mamoudou Athie, deeply invested in wine and aspiring to be a sommelier. He encounters predictable resistance from his restaurant-owning father, Courtney B. Vance, who hopes he’ll join the family business at their barbecue restaurant. The situation escalates when an opportunity arises for him to journey to Paris alongside fellow students to refine his expertise; with assistance from a family fundraising effort, he barely manages to get there, sharing costs with a friend. Before that happens, however, his mother's illness prompts everyone involved to reconsider what’s truly important. The premise isn't particularly original, but the acting is thoughtful and strives to challenge conventional portrayals—both racial and gender-based—employing wine as an engaging link. Sadly, it doesn’t quite deliver a punch; the performances and direction possess a relaxed quality – the enthusiasm is adequately explained, yet we witness little of it actually happening.
