A woman from London arrives in America under an indentured servitude agreement (played by Paulette Goddard) and finds herself caught up in Pontiac’s War, as a colonial officer and a questionable businessman compete for her attention (Gary Cooper and Howard da Silva). The trader has connections to the Seneca chief (Boris Karloff) and is married to his daughter (Katherine DeMille). Cecil B. DeMille directed “Unconquered” (1947), which takes place six years after the events depicted in 1992’s “The Last of the Mohicans.” Because it was released four decades earlier, the film has a certain dated quality, reminiscent of “Gone with the Wind,” but set on the American frontier before the Revolutionary War. If you can adjust to the older style and dramatic presentation, there's still plenty to appreciate, and it might even prompt you to investigate the actual historical events. The final assault on Fort Pitt involved a significant investment in explosives, flash powder, antique firearms, and fireballs. It was likely the most impressive battle sequence filmed at that time, designed to get audiences into theaters with its visual spectacle. Goddard refused to remain on set during the fireball effects, which created a lasting disagreement between her and DeMille; he reportedly didn't speak to her for years afterward. Goddard, who was 36 during filming, is quite beautiful in this vibrant production, despite some elements that feel contrived or cheesy. There are numerous implausible plot points, such as the portrayal of Native Americans being unfamiliar with a compass even though they had been trading with Europeans for over a century. Earlier in the film, Cooper buys and then releases an enslaved person without properly handling the necessary legal documents. Of course! For a more accurate depiction of that period and the same region (Pennsylvania), consider watching “Alone Yet Not Alone” from 2013, which is based on a true story. The movie has a running time of 2 hours and 26 minutes and was filmed primarily on Hollywood studio lots, with some exterior scenes shot in Upstate New York and Western Pennsylvania locations like Pittsburgh and Cook Forest State Park. River sequences were captured in Idaho along the Snake River or its tributaries, such as Upper Mesa Falls on Henrys Fork in eastern-central Idaho. GRADE: B-
