This film, being a Cecil B. DeMille production, is naturally extensive; however, the story generally moves along smoothly. It's a western centered on frontiersmen, featuring a strong ensemble cast that brings to life a well-structured and exciting historical adventure filled with traditional cowboy versus Native American conflicts. Paulette Goddard’s character faces deportation and forced labor from Britain to America, becoming the possession of "Capt. Holden," portrayed by Gary Cooper, while also attracting the unwanted attention of the disreputable “Garth,” played by Howard da Silva. Her freedom—or lack thereof—is intertwined with the fate of British soldiers in the Ohio wilderness, who are threatened by both French forces and the clever Seneca Native Americans, led by a somewhat unusual but still effective Boris Karloff ("Guyasuta"), who simply desire to drive out these newcomers so they can reclaim their ancestral hunting territories. The movie incorporates numerous elements: humor, deception, and just enough romance. Goddard’s character demonstrates spirit and self-reliance, though not quite reaching the level of Maureen O'Hara, but the point is clear. Several other talented actors contribute to the overall quality, with Ward Bond and Cecil Kellaway adding memorable touches, plus brief appearances by Sir C. Aubrey Smith and a young Lloyd Bridges for those who want to spot them. The film benefits from impressive cinematography and a respectable score composed by Victor Young, which enhance its scope and impact; ultimately, it's an enjoyable experience.
