The setup of "Uncle Buck" follows predictable patterns, and the moments of personal realization feel fairly commonplace. The people in the story are recognizable stereotypes that haven't been updated or given any new twists. It seems like all of this should detract from how well the movie works, which is remarkable because it doesn’t. While certainly not a great film, it's very likable and enjoyable, and the humor consistently lands exceptionally well. The movie easily produces plenty of laughs and concludes with an optimistic feeling about what lies ahead for the characters.
