Stories emerging from World War II’s Far East often possess a deeper sense of horror, and this film starkly illustrates the terrible acts committed against prisoners of war by their jailers. The narrative centers on US Olympic athlete Louis Zamperini—portrayed with considerable skill by Jack O'Connell—who encounters a soldier, Watanabe, once his athletic rival, now responsible for overseeing him. Driven by vengeance, he sets out to torment Zamperini relentlessly. Viewers are shown very little of the harshness and inhumanity inflicted on Zamperini and the other prisoners; despite being drained both physically and emotionally, we observe an incredible display of resolve and dignity in confronting this increasing hardship. The supporting actors deliver strong performances—Domnhall Gleeson and Garrett Hedlund stand out—but Angelina Jolie seems to have drawn exceptional work from her two principal performers. Miyavi is particularly effective as Watanabe, conveying menace while also appearing almost pitiable. It’s a difficult film to watch, but it's skillfully made and ultimately rewarding.
