This film is remarkable; a true classic. M. Night Shyamalan managed to completely reimagine the superhero genre with this picture. It's an exceptionally slow-paced and thoughtful consideration of what it would be like if superheroes existed, but portrayed in a realistic way. Bruce Willis portrays David Dunn with impressive restraint and strength. He projects a sense of quiet power, and his personal journey is very well developed. That scene where he’s lifting weights in the basement sticks with you. It's a small moment, certainly, but it carries so much weight—a feeling that he’s beginning to accept that he might be something more than an average person. Samuel L. Jackson as Elijah Price, or “Mr. Glass,” is also perfectly suited for his part. He brings a disturbing and almost mournful depth to the character of a man consumed by finding his opposite. The way Shyamalan crafts their interactions, leading up to that surprising conclusion... it’s a signature Shyamalan twist, but it absolutely works in this instance. The connection between David Dunn and his son is among the most touching elements of Unbreakable. It's a gentle exploration of belief and reliance between a father and son, with Joseph’s constant faith in his dad adding emotional resonance to David’s experiences. Their relationship mirrors the film’s central ideas about self-discovery and the quiet fortitude found within family, making it not just about extraordinary abilities but also about the human relationships that keep us anchored. These softer moments are what provide the movie with its emotional center, contrasting the suspense with genuine feeling. What resonates most with me about Unbreakable is how it subverts comic book conventions without ever resembling a typical superhero film. The visuals, those drawn-out and deliberate shots, create a sense of importance and gravity to everything. And James Newton Howard’s score? It sends shivers down your spine every time.
