Sometimes a movie lover’s tolerance simply breaks; in this case, it's hard to say that artistic freedom justifies Hollywood crafting entertainment at the expense of historical accuracy. U-571 disregards history for its own purposes, and even those who made it would likely be ashamed later on. Nevertheless... As a drama-thriller combination, Jonathan Mostow’s film is quite good. The supporting performances are occasionally questionable, but the production values remain excellent. The tension inside the submarine creates palpable anxiety; the wartime strategies in the Atlantic are well-crafted, and the final confrontation keeps you on the edge of your seat. These elements explain why U-571 has earned respectable scores on popular movie websites. If you view it as pure Hollywood fiction, it’s a thrilling war film that also sounds fantastic through a home theater system. As long as you approach it with that understanding—no matter where you're from—you’ll likely enjoy yourself. But like films such as Braveheart, it would be worthwhile to learn the real story afterward. 6/10
