It felt like another movie about life in the Arctic at first. Actually, it’s set in the Canadian Arctic, but it turned out to be much more than a simple drama. As you watch, you begin to understand the depth of the story. The film doesn't expand unnecessarily; instead, the characters develop. With some unexpected twists and turns, the narrative moves forward. Coming from the director of 'War Witch,' which received an Oscar nomination, the title suggests a focus on three people, but there’s actually a fourth: the father of one of the lovers. Mostly, the film centers around them. A young couple living in a remote frozen town starts to experience their relationship falling apart because one of them is leaving soon. After a brief separation, they reconcile and decide to face any challenges together, which marks the beginning of their adventure. The couple, who are struggling financially, plans to overcome their difficulties by snowmobiling to their destination. It wasn't like other road trip movies; in a vast, deserted landscape, anything could happen at any time. Up until that point, it felt like a typical drama about everyday life. However, the journey introduces a different tone and a bit of thrill to the film. When they are caught in an unexpected blizzard, they seek shelter in an unusual location, after which everything changes for them forever. There wasn't much happening in terms of plot; it was more like observing someone’s real life and their daily activities. But the adventure transforms everything, creating a perfect atmosphere to reveal secrets. Many viewers probably guessed what would happen, but the way it was revealed was well done, explaining all the earlier puzzling events. It wasn't designed to keep everyone in suspense, so that’s why the film is as it is. > ❝If you hurt yourself, you hurt me.❞ Indie films are often low-budget, but this one had enough quality to be enjoyable. It didn't deal with environmental issues or the struggles of Arctic people; it was simply a love story about young lovers. I initially got confused about whether something was meant to be taken literally or metaphorically. With a bear appearing and a difficult father present, I expected some flashbacks to explain things, but they weren’t necessary once the narrative became straightforward. This is a beautifully written film. Considering it's a small production, the filmmakers must have had a tough time shooting in such harsh conditions. The locations were stunning, especially in the second half. Those scenes were often surprising and contrasted with what you’d become accustomed to in the first part, which made the movie very interesting. Aside from the overall film, the ending was decent. I don't think everyone will be happy with it; even I wasn't sure if I liked the film after seeing that kind of conclusion. What is certain is that it’s not a perfect cinematic ending as we’re used to, though that’s certainly a possibility in real life. If they had altered the ending to please viewers, the result might have been better. But I think an unusual and unexpected ending is preferable to a cliché any time. Both lead actors, Dane DeHaan and Tatiana Maslany, were very good. The roles weren't particularly challenging, but performing in those difficult conditions was impressive. The film primarily focused on them; other characters appeared briefly. It’s worth watching for their performances, even if it wasn’t the best work of their careers. What stands out is how they portray a couple and how their character transformations evolve throughout the story. I heard they used a real bear, and I wondered how that was possible on such a tight budget. It was simple and charmingly done. At first, I thought it might be a fantasy, but that’s something the story had to hold back for later. This is one of those films that has gone largely unnoticed. Not every film needs to be exceptional; telling the same story in a different setting using available resources can sometimes work well. Whatever the case, the film wasn't bad considering why it was overlooked since its release. Perhaps people’s lack of awareness and dismissing it after seeing low ratings are to blame. I think if you're looking for something different from mainstream cinema, this is worth checking out. _7/10_
