The film follows Joanna (Audrey Hepburn) and her husband Mark (Albert Finney) on a journey to southern France for the unveiling of a house designed by him for Maurice (Claude Dauphin) and Francoise (Nadia Gray). It becomes apparent early on that their marriage has lost its spark, and they’re simply going through the motions. Director Stanley Donen interweaves flashbacks throughout the trip, revealing happier moments from their past—their initial meeting, a vintage car adventure, romantic encounters under the night sky. These sequences also show how problems arose, eroding their trust and leading to self-centered actions that ultimately bring them to where they are at the beginning of the story. Whether their situation can be salvaged seemed almost beside the point. The film’s strength lies in the palpable chemistry between the two leads; it's clear Finney is having a great time, while Hepburn radiates a joyousness and carefree spirit that makes their love story captivating. As the narrative unfolds, they both mature, forcing us to witness their evolution—an experience with uncertain outcomes. The dialogue feels genuine and often quite funny, delivered with assurance by actors who are clearly comfortable together. Henri Mancini’s score perfectly complements this story of two people who have lost their way but still manage to maintain a pleasant sense of enjoyment in life.
