How long are you going to resent the past? Stanley Donen directed Two for the Road, which was written by Frederic Raphael. Albert Finney and Audrey Hepburn lead the cast, accompanied by a score from Henry Mancini, with cinematography by Christopher Challis. The film essentially breaks down the relationship between Joanna (Hepburn) and Mark Wallace (Finney), presenting it in a way that isn't chronological. As this couple begins their journey together, they experience vacations, disagreements, reconciliations—all woven across twelve years. Donen and Raphael have created a movie that exposes the various emotional aspects of a man’s and woman’s connection for everyone to witness. It’s this straightforwardness, along with the two appealing performers, that really draws me in. There are humorous and even silly instances, but these are always balanced by feelings of sadness or regret, so it's not quite a comedy or drama, but rather an almost flawless combination of both—or bittersweet, as a more precise term might put it. Mancini’s music is pleasant and lighthearted, with the title track apparently being one he particularly enjoyed, while Challis’ Panavision photography is frequently lovely. There’s some suspension of disbelief needed for Hepburn portraying her younger self, and one recurring joke goes on far too long, but Two for the Road still feels new and captivating for those prepared to fully engage with the themes surrounding marriage. The film concludes with a memorable line from the main characters that will stick with you. 8/10
