A listless young boy moves through his enormous house, filled with every comfort imaginable for food, entertainment, and leisure. He notices another boy outside playing a simple flute from his window. The privileged youngster then retrieves a more elaborate instrument and plays louder than him. The other boy retaliates by bringing out a drum—but the wealthier one has a mechanical monkey capable of playing two instruments simultaneously. Not wanting to be overshadowed, the less fortunate boy reappears wearing an intimidating mask and holding a bow and arrow. The reaction? Another mask, along with a machine gun! A stillness falls as the boys separate, only for a kite to appear outside the house's barred windows. It drifts freely in the breeze like a creature swimming in water, but it’s also a target for a slingshot or even an air rifle. One boy’s pleasure is another’s disappointment; one feels superior while the other seems disheartened. The flute player persistently returns... This presents a striking portrayal of possessions lacking true worth compared to having nothing and yet possessing so much more. Ravi Kiran Karla's performance as the boy with everything is quite successful in making him appear spoiled and unpleasant, while the expressions on his impoverished counterpart’s face evoke empathy, as Satyajit Ray provides a nuanced observation about those who have versus those who don’t. But who truly has the most?
