The film earns an 8.7 out of 10. As Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “The war in Vietnam is but a symptom of a far deeper malady within the American spirit.” Satyajit Ray demonstrates, using only twelve minutes and without any spoken words, how easily influenced a child’s mind can be, and illustrates that even with every advantage at his disposal, a privileged boy will still feel threatened by the freedom experienced by someone less fortunate. It's this very sense of freedom that allows the disadvantaged individual to recover from setbacks. Machines will fail, and music will return. If you consider the wealthy child to represent the United States and the impoverished child to be Vietnam, those twelve minutes of Ray’s work offer an explanation for America’s defeat in the war.
