It exists somewhere between sleep and consciousness. Twixt is the creation of Francis Ford Coppola, who wrote and directed it. Val Kilmer, Bruce Dern, Elle Fanning, Ben Chaplin, Joanne Whalley, and Don Novello are among the performers featured. The score comes from Dan Deacon and Osvaldo Golijov, and Mihai Malaimare handled the cinematography. Hall Baltimore, portrayed by Kilmer, is a novelist facing difficulties with his witchcraft-themed books. While on a promotional tour in a quiet American town, he becomes entangled with malevolence, murder, and what appears to be the spirit of Edgar Allan Poe. But discerning reality proves elusive... Twixt suggests Coppola has eased into a more experimental phase of filmmaking, drawing from dreams and personal experiences for inspiration. The film is largely an exercise in dreamlike imagery, both visually and narratively, resulting in a frequently whimsical experience that still manages to charm with its oddness and bold visual elements. There's also a fair amount of humor present, ranging from knowing jokes to the plainly ridiculous, but those seeking a horror film will likely be let down. It’s an intriguing failure, possessing qualities reminiscent of David Lynch’s work; while the cast is entertaining, it’s hard to wholeheartedly suggest this movie. 6/10
