Twister is an enjoyable film to watch. It’s likely that this was among the first movies I ever saw; it came out a few months after I was born, and I have a hazy recollection of watching it on video when I was little. My mom had recorded it alongside a random music concert that was also airing at the time—I can still visualize the screen switching between the film and the music. However, if my memory is accurate and I really did see it back then, rather than recalling just the concert or someone else watching either, I don't remember anything about this movie—not a single thing. Still, I knew generally what the film was about (it’s pretty straightforward!), and that Bill Paxton was in it. The movie itself is entertaining, though naturally not flawless. The special effects have held up surprisingly well for 1996; there are a few moments that look a bit silly, but considering when it was made, they're perfectly acceptable. The music is nice too. I didn’t care much for the romantic conflict; in fact, it frustrated me at times. Melissa’s character feels underdeveloped, and there’s really no point to Jami Gertz’s role given what eventually happens (which is pretty predictable). Helen Hunt delivers a strong performance, probably the best of the nearly two hours. Paxton comes close to matching her, though. Lois Smith and Philip Seymour Hoffman are also memorable beyond Hunt and Paxton. Cary Elwes appears as well, but his part is quite forgettable. I’m looking forward to seeing what they do with this year's separate sequel starring Glen Powell and others. From the bits of the trailer I’ve seen, I think it will be just as good—or maybe even a little better—than the original. Only time will tell.
