The challenge of finding genuine connections—whether friendships or romantic relationships—appears more difficult now than it used to be. These kinds of bonds seem harder to come by, and establishing meaningful, lasting relationships with others has become noticeably more challenging, sometimes pushing people to extreme measures. This can be particularly true for individuals in less conventional communities, as well as those struggling to cope with the loss of loved ones. James Sweeney, who wrote, directed, and acted in this new film, offers audiences a chance to observe these struggles firsthand through an unexpected but moving story. After each losing their identical twin brothers, Roman (Dylan O’Brien) and Dennis (Sweeney) find themselves attending a support group. A meeting between them blossoms into a close friendship that seems to ease the pain of their loss. They offer each other comfort as they navigate grief. However, something about the relationship feels off. As more details emerge, inconsistencies arise, despite having nothing to do with fundamental differences—Dennis is gay while Roman isn’t, although Roman's deceased twin brother was. What’s really happening? Giving away any more would spoil things, but it's safe to say that surprising developments are ahead and they relate to the issues mentioned earlier. “Twinless” continues themes Sweeney first explored in "Straight Up" (2019), which looked at loneliness and the desire for connection, especially among those who feel like outsiders. Like its previous work, this comedy-drama succeeds by using a well-built, smart story that takes an interesting and entertaining path as it unfolds, featuring gentle humor, touching moments without being overly sentimental or predictable, clever plot twists, and honest observations. The film may not offer absolute answers to all the questions it raises, but it does provide hints about how we’ve reached this point, along with possible ways to deal with sorrow and loneliness and move beyond them so that we don't feel quite as alone.
