The movie has a notable ensemble, but it’s not particularly memorable as a thriller. The story centers around an ex-police officer, Ross (Paul Newman), who shares a home with a prosperous, ailing actor, Ames (Gene Hackman), and his wife, Catherine (Susan Sarandon). When a young girl is abducted, he's enlisted to handle the ransom payment—but predictably, things don’t go smoothly, drawing him into a dangerous situation connected to her ex-husband from two decades prior. James Garner has a role, which brought to mind an episode of "The Rockford Files," something this could have easily been. The performers are present, but they – particularly Hackman – seem disengaged. Their performances lack energy, and that’s not helped by the ordinary writing or a plot that doesn't bring anything fresh to the table. It makes you question what attracted Paul Newman to the project in the first place. It's fairly obvious to viewers who is manipulating events, and from there it feels like a routine process kept afloat only by the considerable screen presence of the actors. The title fits the two main men; I can’t imagine them choosing this kind of film at the height of their careers.
