At first glance, this film seems simpler than it truly is. I realize not everyone wants to invest themselves deeply in a movie if it doesn’t immediately grab them, and I get that. And I also recognize that viewers hoping for an exciting supernatural or traditional horror experience might find this quite strange and unusual. It's presented as a horror comedy, which isn't always a successful combination. In this instance, though, the humor shifts into something genuinely unpleasant and unsettling. Imagining myself experiencing this film fresh, without any background information, I can say that the latter portion of the story is disorienting. You’ll find yourself laughing, certainly, but it’s more of an uneasy chuckle, leading you to question what exactly you're witnessing. And then there's the conclusion—that ending. It’s a worthwhile resolution, isn't it? The main character lives through everything, so that should please most people, shouldn't it? However, it’s hard not to feel awful for the protagonist. This horror comedy turns out to be far more complex than its initial appearance suggests. The protagonist initially seems unpleasant—selfish, unlikeable, driven, and uncaring; you can label him however you want. You anticipate that he'll face some sort of consequences. But what he endures isn’t the typical gruesome ordeal seen in a film like 'Saw.' It goes much further than that. Yet, there's something positive to be found within it all. His loss of humanity, strangely enough, seems to restore his sense of self-worth. He feels more human now than he did at the beginning. This works better than any of the traps featured in 'Saw'. The only potential problem: I’ve heard that Kevin Smith is planning a sequel where the protagonist—now restored to himself—could become the antagonist. That would be unfortunate, as it could undermine his journey toward redemption. We'll have to wait and see..."
