Turning Red marks a bold, potentially polarizing moment for Pixar. Domee Shi and Julia Cho tackle the subject of (female) puberty with remarkable candor and a surprising positive effect. The story clearly examines the physical, emotional, and sexual changes happening to the characters, communicating a theme of embracing oneself and understanding human development through metaphors full of youthful energy. Featuring the expected high-quality animation from the studio, this film should be particularly valuable for young teens experiencing or about to experience this natural and sometimes awkward stage of life.
