John Chard on Turistas

6/10 · Oct 18, 2015

Following a bus accident during a tour of Brazil, a group of young people are plunged into a situation filled with distress. Turistas (also known as Paradise Lost) isn’t one you'd expect to see promoted by the Brazilian Tourist Board; it’s a rather uneven film. The storyline has been explored before: attractive individuals find themselves confronting criminals and disturbed personalities in an unfamiliar and largely incomprehensible setting. The initial development of the horror aspects is gradual, which might test the patience of some viewers who enjoy scary movies. On the other hand, this pacing allows for character development, creating opportunities for humor, dramatic moments, and a look at how people from different countries interact. You may not particularly invest in their fates, but you’ll get to know them nonetheless. The movie was actually shot in Brazil, showcasing plenty of natural beauty—and also the country's challenging landscapes—all captured nicely by Enrique Chediak (who has worked on films like 28 Weeks Later and 127 Hours). The underwater scenes are particularly impressive, including a long chase that elevates the film beyond standard horror/thriller fare. The filmmakers attempted to incorporate some meaningful themes, but they get overshadowed as events become increasingly bizarre. Despite this, there's enough skillful filmmaking on display, along with a genuinely unsettling horror sequence, to make it worth watching. It’s considerably better than some of the negative criticism it has received, although those seeking straightforward horror should be aware that the film doesn't fully embrace the genre until later in its runtime. 6/10
