A survivalist thriller needs to make you care about the people struggling to survive; it requires an emotional connection that makes you want them to succeed despite difficult circumstances. "Turbulence" fails in this fundamental aspect because its central characters are deeply flawed and unpleasant individuals. The husband and wife, along with a female blackmailer who joins them on their flight, all exhibit terrible qualities. Kelsey Grammer’s portrayal of “Harry” is the only genuinely appealing element within this unsavory group, but his time in the story is brief, eliminating him early on. Then, the remaining performers—who seem to echo the cast of "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels"—begin trying to eliminate one another while suspended high above the landscape amidst wind, rain, and clouds. Ultimately, despite a few moments of excitement, the film’s potential is undermined by the fact that you can't bring yourself to care about these characters due to their consistently harsh and unforgiving actions. It’s an unremarkable movie, at its highest point.
