It’s disheartening when films that truly warrant attention don't receive it, especially considering some recent releases have been lauded without justification. This applies to the newest film from writer-director Daniel Roher, a romantic crime thriller that easily ranks among the best movies of 2026. The life planned for Niki White (Leo Woodall), once a promising piano player, is thrown off course when he develops a severe hearing impairment making loud noises painful and effectively ending his career as a performer. He can still tolerate quieter sounds, which allows him to become a piano tuner—his perfect pitch proves helpful in this role. He apprentices under an experienced piano tuner and repairman, Harry Horowitz (Dustin Hoffman), who becomes both mentor and friend. Niki inadvertently discovers that his abilities also make him suited for safecracking; he can hear the faint clicks of combination locks and open almost any safe. When he meets Uri (Lior Raz), a dishonest security systems installer who steals from wealthy clients, Niki is asked to join his operation. Initially hesitant, Niki quickly embraces this opportunity when he realizes how much money he could earn. This becomes even more important as he needs funds for an urgent expense and to impress Ruthie (Havana Rose Liu), a conservatory student hoping to become a composer. However, the comfortable life he finds himself in comes with consequences that threaten to overwhelm him. The various plot threads converge into a tense situation with far-reaching effects. How will things resolve? This is the story the filmmaker presents, skillfully blending elements from different genres and creating a tightly plotted, well-written film. The cast is excellent—Woodall delivers a standout performance and Hoffman appears revitalized—and they all make the most of the strong script, particularly when it comes to humor and thoughtful observations. The music also stands out, combining original pieces with familiar favorites. I sincerely hope this film isn't overlooked during awards season because it deserves recognition in many ways. “Tuner” is a must-see for those who value quality cinema.
