Tumbbad proves to be quite enjoyable folk horror. It stands apart from what’s typically seen coming out of Bollywood, based on my experience with films from that region. Besides an unavoidable musical break, the whole thing felt distinctive – in a positive way. I'd mention that the narrative does lag somewhat during its central section; however, the beginning and ending are quite striking, especially given the presence of younger performers. I feel the film shines brightest when Dhundiraj Jogalekar, Mohammad Samad, and Jyoti Malshe, along with Rudra Soni, share the screen. The visual effects related to Hastar aren’t top-notch, but the filmmakers manage to pull it off, still creating a creepy atmosphere. The practical effects used for the 'old woman' are excellent, though, and genuinely unsettling. The plot is solid; its message about greed is fairly direct, but it functions well and is presented effectively. As I said earlier, if there hadn’t been that slow point in the middle, my rating would be higher. Nevertheless, it's a fun movie overall and something I’d suggest checking out.
