It felt significant to share this story because I’ve encountered other portrayals of motherhood before, and they often lean toward humor—like jokes about needing vodka or coffee mugs with silly sayings. What I haven't seen explored is the darker side of it. It used to feel sufficient simply being a capable caretaker, but now there’s this expectation that you also need to be physically fit, attractive, successful, and so much more. That’s quite a burden. _Tully_ focuses on Marlo (Charlize Theron), a suburban mother in New York expecting her third child. Her husband, Drew (Ron Livingstone), is kind but somewhat detached, preferring video games over helping Tully manage the household and family. Unaware of the difficulties she's experiencing, he doesn’t recognize when Marlo begins to show signs of post-partum depression. Following the baby’s arrival, Marlo’s affluent brother, Craig (Mark Duplass), hires a night nanny named Tully (Mackenzie Davis) to alleviate some of the stress on Marlo. Initially hesitant about the idea, Marlo soon develops a close connection with Tully, who introduces her to an unfamiliar way of life. The film is best experienced without knowing too much beforehand. It benefits from strong performances by Theron and Davis, and was written by Diablo Cody (_Jennifer's Body_; _Ricki and the Flash_) and directed by Jason Reitman (_Thank You for Smoking_; _Juno_; _Men, Women & Children_), a team that previously collaborated on _Young Adult_ (2011), which also featured Theron. The two films share a noticeable thematic consistency, almost as if they’re connected in some alternate reality. My main criticism of _Tully_ is that the supporting characters lack depth—Drew, the well-intentioned but ineffective husband, especially feels underdeveloped. However, this is somewhat understandable given the story's focus. Ultimately, it's a valuable exploration of an issue rarely depicted on screen: imperfect motherhood. Be aware though; neither the movie poster nor the trailer accurately represent the film. It has humorous moments, but it’s not intended as a comedy.
