Perhaps because its subject matter concerned American politics, and the broader audience seemed less interested. Its performance in the United States was disheartening. A relatively new director handled the project, demonstrating considerable skill both behind the camera and as a writer. The story is adapted from Mary Mapes’ memoir, 'Truth and Duty.' The movie centers on journalism, unfolding during the period leading up to the 2004 presidential election. It follows ‘60 Minutes Wednesday,’ a well-known CBS news program, which aired reports containing documents suggesting George W. Bush had manipulated records related to his military service in the eighties. Following this revelation, those involved—from the producer to the host—faced considerable criticism. The rest of the film explores how one individual chose to confront the situation and whether that effort would be successful. I’ve never been particularly drawn to Cate Blanchett, but I've always respected her acting abilities. Here, she was remarkable and visually striking. It stands out as a significant role for her, and it felt deserving of multiple award nominations, though I can’t grasp why it was completely overlooked. The supporting cast was also excellent; Robert Redford was particularly impressive in his portrayal of a news anchor. He's aged gracefully; otherwise, I would have imagined him taking on the part of Donald Trump—perhaps in a biopic or even a comedic take. Similar to how the film exposed what happened to Mapes, it seems that powerful and influential figures may have intentionally kept this movie from gaining wider attention. Nevertheless, having seen it, I believe it’s one of the most important films of the year, especially for those interested in the United States and its political system. The conclusion is somber, but I've watched other journalistic dramas that celebrate resilience; this film presents a contrasting perspective. I was deeply moved by the lines Cate Blanchett delivered during one of the final scenes. I encourage you to watch it, ideally after reading my thoughts on it. 8/10
