Nick Simon directed "Truth or Dare," which came out in 2017, and it centers around eight college students who choose to have an overnight party at a house with a disturbing history—several young people died there mysteriously back in 1983. A sinister force connected to the location compels them to play three rounds of 'Truth or Dare,' with each round becoming more intense. The question is, will anyone make it through? "Truth or Dare" starts out feeling like a haunted house movie, but it moves beyond that after the initial portion. Basically, the characters don't stay trapped inside the house for the whole film. That’s actually a good thing because sticking to one location can be tough for filmmakers and potentially boring for audiences—though "House of the Witch" from 2017 managed to do it well. The first little while, roughly fifteen minutes or so, is pretty enjoyable thanks to the party atmosphere, but things quickly turn dark and serious after that. The cast, who are mostly not widely known, does a good job, with Cassie Scerbo being particularly memorable as the main character. She’s certainly recognizable, and the movie definitely emphasizes her looks (and I'm not talking about nudity). Alexxis Lemire & Christina Masterson also make an impression among the female characters, as does Taylor Lyons in the opening sequence. The plot turns out to be more complex than it initially seems because a compelling psychological aspect emerges later on. If you’re into low-budget horror films similar to "House of the Witch" and "From Within" (2008), then you might like “Truth or Dare.” However, keep in mind that the second half becomes increasingly difficult to watch because of the brutal ‘dares’ the young people have to endure. These sections aren't fun to experience, but they are captivating, and the actors deliver believable performances. The film has a runtime of around 89 minutes and was filmed somewhere in the Eastern United States (there's no information about the specific town or state). Thommy Hutson & Ethan Lawrence wrote the screenplay. Heather Langenkamp, known for her work in "A Nightmare on Elm Street," appears in a small role. I’d give it a B.
