Life can be harsh; we’re limited in how much we can shield ourselves and our kids. All that's left is to support each other when things go wrong. Trust comes from director David Schwimmer and the writing team of Andy Bellin and Robert Festinger, with a cast including Clive Owen, Catherine Keener, Liana Liberato, Jason Clarke, Viola Davis, Gail Friedman, Chris Henry Coffey and Tristan Peach. Nathan Larson composed the music, and Andrzej Sekula was in charge of cinematography. The story centers on a young woman who becomes the target of an online sexual predator, resulting in immense suffering for her family. For his second feature film as director, Schwimmer demonstrated bravery by tackling such a difficult subject. He created a thoughtful exploration of a pressing issue, avoiding sensationalism and offering no easy solutions. The performances from Liberato (as Annie) and Owen (as Will) are particularly affecting. The movie shows a girl who believes she’s connecting with another teenager online; as she develops feelings for him, the predator gradually reveals his true nature, leaving her disoriented and under his control. When the relationship is exposed, the parents experience intense emotional distress, and the father reacts in a way that feels realistic. The story explores how the family struggles alongside the girl’s own turmoil, which includes facing judgment from those around her. The screenplay touches on other instances of online predators without being overly explicit, and the ending provides an unsettling but important question about who we can truly rely on, especially considering these individuals often hide their true selves. The film combines a family's struggles with the intrusion of a dangerous figure into their lives; it’s not easy to watch, but it is worthwhile. 7/10
