It feels like an early work in the style of Tarantino. Apparently, he worked on the script for someone else who ended up directing it, so it’s a blend of his influence and another person's vision. It shares that same violent and unusual sensibility you find in many of his films. I laughed out loud when I read the plot summary online; it really does nail what the movie is about: “Clarence marries Alabama, who works as a prostitute, steals drugs from her pimp, and attempts to sell them in Hollywood, while those who own the drugs try to get them back.” The conversations feel genuine, and there's a real connection between the two central characters. It boasts an impressive cast, even though many of the performers take on supporting roles, creating a strong ensemble of character actors and actresses. I definitely suggest checking it out. There’s also one other thing that stood out to me and added to my enjoyment of the film—the music. Hans Zimmer composed the score, and he's considered among the very best in the business. If you’ve seen “Badlands” starring Martin Sheen and Cissy Spacek, you’ll notice a striking similarity (practically identical) between the opening themes of those two movies. The music for "Badlands," another film about a killer and his girlfriend on the road, was composed by Carl Orff, drawn from a piece he originally created as a study for other musicians to use. I only know this because, before we had Google, I spent weeks trying to figure out where that music came from since “Badlands” didn’t have a soundtrack release. You'll also pick up on the similar voiceover endings in both films, spoken by the women, which I think is meant as an homage to "Badlands."
